Concerns over plans for 300 new homes in Rochford
Campaigners claim farmland will be lost in new proposals
Plans for a new housing development in Rochford, Essex have sparked serious concerns among residents and councillors, with fears that the construction would result in the irreversible loss of local farmland.
Bellway Strategic Land has submitted plans to build 300 homes near Victory Lane. However, campaigners argue that this would result in the permanent loss of "the best and most versatile farmland", according to comments made at a recent Rochford District Council development committee meeting.
Resident Ashley Harrison voiced strong opposition to the proposal, highlighting the importance of the farmland as a finite national resource that should be preserved.
Traffic impact was another major issue raised during the meeting. Councillor Danielle Belton worried that existing pressures could worsen and urged the council not to approve applications based only on financial pressures.
Despite these objections, planning officers defended the plans, calling the development suitable for the area and stating there had been no objections from statutory consultees. They suggested the benefits would outweigh any negatives.
The developers stress there is a need for housing in the district and maintain that the design will be sympathetic to neighbouring homes and the landscape, incorporating sustainable infrastructure and drainage systems.
Currently, there is an ongoing planning appeal launched by Bellway Strategic Land due to delays in the council’s decision-making process. While the council ultimately voted to refuse the plans, the final decision will rest with the Government’s Planning Inspectorate.
