Cold War-era MiG-17F jet to feature at Clacton Airshow this August
A historic jet will soar above Clacton seafront this summer
A distinctive Cold War-era jet fighter, the MiG-17F 'Fresco', is set to captivate the skies at the 33rd Clacton Airshow, organised by Tendring District Council, on 27th and 28th August.
The aircraft will feature in both the Thursday evening twilight display and Friday's daytime programme, providing two opportunities for visitors to witness its iconic design and historic significance.
Developed in the early 1950s and known for its speed and manoeuvrability, the MiG-17F was designed with swept wings, an afterburning engine, and powerful nose-mounted cannons.
The aircraft featured at the Airshow, built in Poland in 1958, was restored following its service with the Polish Air Force, returning to the skies in April this year after a two-and-a-half-year refurbishment by FUBAR Aviation.
Visitors can expect aerobatics and low passes at impressive speeds of up to 900km/h, as well as gravity-defying manoeuvres during its routine, where the aircraft will pull about 6–7G.
Councillor Mark Stephenson, Tendring District Council Leader, spoke about the anticipated highlight of the Airshow, saying, “The MiG-17F will be a real standout moment at this year’s Clacton Airshow, bringing a very different kind of sound, speed and atmosphere to the seafront.
"To see this historic jet flying in the Thursday twilight display will be something really special, and I am sure it will make a big impression on residents and visitors watching from the beach and greensward.
"This year’s theme is all about celebrating aviation, and the MiG is another exciting addition to what is shaping up to be a fantastic two days on the Essex Sunshine Coast.”
The jet will be piloted by Bartosz Maciejczyk, FUBAR Aviation's chief executive, who has over 15,000 flying hours. FUBAR Aviation, based at Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in Poland, operates the MiG-17F alongside other MiG aircraft, ensuring they continue to fascinate new generations.
The Clacton Airshow is set to feature an array of exhibits, including performances by the renowned RAF Red Arrows and the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, promising a thrilling event for attendees.
