Colchester Zoo 'runner-up' in national sustainability awards
It came from the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums
Colchester Zoological Society have announced they have been awarded 'runner-up' in the 2026 Sustainability Award from the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA).
Colchester Zoo received the award for Cross-Sector Collaboration for Sustainability, recognising the partnerships they have built with local communities and organisations to drive positive environmental change.
Over the past year, the Zoo have brought together representatives from schools, parish councils, community nature groups, and partner organisations to share knowledge, develop strategies, and inspire practical action for a greener, more sustainable Essex. From supporting local nature recovery to building community networks, these collaborations demonstrate the power of working together for the benefit of both people and wildlife.
CEO of BIAZA, Jo Judge, said:
"This is an incredible achievement reflecting the very best in the zoo and aquarium community. We are at the very forefront of the fightback for nature, which needs all our help. As leaders we are absolutely committed to the very highest levels of animal welfare, conservation, education and research – all while offering brilliant days out for the family."
