Colchester Zoo has revealed that its last remaining lion has died due to declining health.

18 year old Bailey had been under veterinary care for several conditions, including reduced mobility and a tumour on his leg, alongside signs of deteriorating kidney function.

The decision was made by the Animal Care Team at the zoo, who felt his quality of life could no longer be maintained.

Bailey had been part of the Colchester Zoo family since 2010, after arriving from Woburn Safari Park.

Emma, the Team Leader of the Carnivore Section, said, "It has been a privilege to care for Bailey over the years. He will hold a special place in the hearts of the Animal Care Team and all that have had the pleasure to know and work with him."

Bailey was well-loved by visitors and staff, known for his strong personality and affection for Christmas trees and cardboard boxes

Colchester Zoo has expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time, mentioning that Bailey's habitat at Lion Rock will remain empty as they process the loss

The news follows the recent passing of two Patagonian sea lions, Sydney and Milan, adding to the sorrow felt by the zoo community.
