Residents, businesses, and visitors are invited to participate in a major public consultation shaping plans for a new Bus Station Interchange in Colchester.

The consultation, which begins on 28th September, marks a significant step in bringing buses back to Painters Yard, transforming part of the old bus station site into a modern transport hub.

For the first time, artist impressions of the proposed transport interchange offer a glimpse into how Painters Yard could look and function in reconnecting the area with Colchester's city centre.

Developed by Team Colchester—a partnership between Essex County Council and Colchester City Council—the proposals aim to enhance public transport provision, support future growth, and continue the regeneration of east Colchester.

Cllr Jeff Bray, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Heritage at Essex County Council, described the project as “an exciting opportunity for Colchester and a chance to bring back to life a space that is underused.”

He emphasized the importance of local input in refining the proposals and developing a business case for funding, urging residents to engage with the process.

Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of Colchester City Council, highlighted the wider aspirations of transforming the vacant site into a welcoming gateway that complements Colchester’s heritage and culture.

Residents can take part online, view visual representations, and attend engagement events throughout the city during the consultation period.

Painters Yard was chosen as the preferred location after thorough assessments of various city centre sites, proving optimal for bus operations and future demand.

Cllr Paul Dundas, Leader of Colchester City Council, celebrated reaching a milestone toward realizing a new bus station, expressing the importance of community involvement to ensure successful execution.

The consultation represents the next phase of Colchester's regeneration, combining transport improvements with heritage, culture, and economic growth, and local voices are integral to shaping this vision.
