Detectives in Colchester are continuing to investigate the circumstances which led to a man being knocked unconscious during an assault in the town centre.

Officers were alerted to reports of a fight shortly before 4.20am on Saturday 28 August, in St Botolph’s Street.

A man aged in his 40s was found near the junction with Queen Street.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

A 20-year-old man from West Bergholt and a 19-year-old man from Colchester were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Both have been released on bail until September 22.

A woman who was arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until September 24.

Essex Police are renewing our appeal for anyone who was driving through the area between 4.10am and 4.20am.

Detective Sergeant Paul Olney, of Colchester CID, is leading the investigation.

He said:

“While we have collected high quality CCTV, both from Colchester Borough Council and venues in the Queen Street area, we know there could be other footage out there which will be useful to our investigation.

“It is a route which is well-used by taxi drivers so it is possible some of the town’s drivers could have dashcam footage of the incident or the lead up to it.

“My team have worked tirelessly to establish the events in the lead up to this incident but if you think you could help, please get in touch.”
