A murder inquiry is underway after Essex Police passed on information about a woman's death four years ago.

The fifty-seven-year-old died in Telford in 2022 and detectives have this morning exhumed a grave near Whitchurch in Shropshire.

A sixty-two-year-old man's been arrested on suspicion of murder and bailed.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse, from West Mercia Police's Major Investigations Unit, said:

“On Wednesday 6 May 2026 we were contacted by Essex Police after information was given to them regarding the death of a 57-year-old woman in Telford in 2022.

“An investigation was then launched by West Mercia Police, and a 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been released on police bail as enquiries continue."

“As part of the ongoing investigation, which is now being treated as an unexplained death, this morning (Monday 7th of September) officers have completed the exhumation of a grave at Fenns Meadow Green Burial Ground near Whitchurch, Shropshire."

“The activity at the cemetery is unrelated to the burial ground, but we would like to thank Fenns Meadow Green for their cooperation and assistance while we carried out this complex operation."

"Due to the ongoing investigation we are unable to release further details at this time but will do so when we are able to.”
