A Benfleet woman has been handed a suspended sentence after she failed to stop at the scene of a fatal collision in Ashlyns, Basildon.

16-year-old Roman, and 9-year-old Darcie Casselden died when their e-scooter was hit with a car last year.

The driver of the car, 21-year-old Deimante Ziobryte from Benfleet, failed to stop at the scene and pleaded guilty to the offence at Basildon Magistrates' Court in March.

At a sentencing today (Wednesday 6 May), Ziobryte has received a three-month custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with 80 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation days.

She has also been disqualified from driving for three years, starting on 6 March, and ordered to pay £239 in costs.

Detectives from Essex Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit concluded their investigation and said there were no offences identified relating to the cause of the collision.

Detective Sergeant Sam Nason, who led the investigation, said:

“My thoughts, and those of my team, are with Roman and Darcie’s friends and family.

“Regardless of what led up to the collision, Deimante Ziobryte should have stopped at the scene.

“She did not attempt to return to the scene and she did not call the emergency services."
