Man sentenced to nearly seven years for rape in Basildon’s Bonnygate area
Daniel Ryan jailed following detailed police investigation
A man from Basildon has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison following his conviction for rape in the Bonnygate area.
Daniel Ryan, 39, was apprehended after approaching an unconscious woman shortly before 4pm on 31st August last year.
A concerned passerby noticed Ryan acting suspiciously around the woman and alerted authorities.
Police arrived quickly, arresting Ryan at 4.05pm and ensuring the victim was brought to safety.
She has since received support from specialist officers.
Ryan, residing in Goldhanger Cross, Basildon, was charged with rape after a swift and thorough investigation.
He faced Southend Magistrates’ Court on 2nd September and admitted the charge at Basildon Crown Court on 24th October.
The sentencing took place yesterday, 5th February, at Basildon Crown Court.
Detective Constable Chloe Dolce from the crime and public protection team commented on the case:
“Daniel Ryan is an opportunistic rapist. He took advantage of a vulnerable woman, and his sentence today shows the gravity of his crime.”
She highlighted the impact on the victim:
“Ryan’s behaviour is amongst the worst I have seen as a police officer, and I cannot overestimate the impact this has had on our victim. She is bravely working through it with her loved ones and our support, but I know her experience is not something which will pass quickly."
Dolce emphasized that the sentencing affirms accountability:
“However, I truly hope that the sentence shows her that there is only one person who deserves to live with these actions for the rest of his life – and that is Daniel Ryan. He is the only person at fault.”
