Drivers are facing lengthy diversions of up to 33 miles due to planned resurfacing works on the A120 near Braintree.

National Highways is warning motorists of night closures of the A120 between Galleys Corner and Mark’s Farm between May and July.

National Highways says the one-mile stretch of road needs resurfacing and upgrades to its technology. But to carry out this work safely, they will need to close the A120 in both directions between Galleys Corner roundabout and Mark’s Farm roundabout.

That means to get to the Marks Farm roundabout, motorists will have to drive via the A131 to Boreham, then along the A12 to Marks Tey, and then all the way back along the A120.

They plan to complete the work between May 26 and July 2026, with overnight work scheduled between 8pm and 6am on weeknights and weekend nights, weather permitting.

A statement from National Highways said: “I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out maintenance work on the A120 in both directions between Galleys Corner roundabout and Mark’s Farm roundabout. The work includes resurfacing, refreshing road markings, replacing worn road studs (also known as cat eyes) and technology work.

“This work is needed to maintain and repair the equipment we use to monitor our network and manage traffic flows. In addition, helping to keep journeys safe and reliable and giving drivers a smoother and better-defined road surface.”
