Line of Duty is one of the biggest crime dramas ever to grace our screens, so it's no surprise the show attracts some huge names! As well as the likes of Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston and Vicky McClure, actors like Stephen Graham, Keeley Hawes and Thandiwe Newton have also appeared over the years.

Now we know a seventh series is arriving in 2027, with Robert Carlyle joining the cast, here we take a look at the cast of Line of Duty from series one to six, and who fans can expect to see in the new series.

Who is in the cast of Line of Duty series one?

Martin, Vicky and Adrian made their debut in AC-12 alongside series one bad guy Lennie James, who played the role of DCI Tony Gates. Gina McKee played Jackie Laverty, whilst we also met characters like DS Matthew "Dot" Cottan (Craig Parkinson), DC Nigel Morton (Neil Morrissey) and Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie).

Series two saw English actress Keeley Hawes join the cast as DI Lindsay Denton alongside the usual faces, with Jessica Raine also starring as DC Georgia Trotman. Mark Bonnar also made his debut as Deputy Chief Constable Mike Dryden.

Casting went up a notch for the third series, with Daniel Mays, Will Mellor, Arsher Ali and Leanne Best all joining the cast. It was also Craig Parkinson's last outing as DS Matthew "Dot" Cottan in a main role, with Keeley Hawes also appearing as Lindsay Denton for a final time, following her brutal murder by 'The Caddy'.

After moving to a primetime slot on BBC One, series four saw award-winning actress Thandiwe Newton join the cast as DCI Roseanne “Roz” Huntley, as well as Jason Watkins as Forensic Coordinator Tim Ifield.

Martin, Vicky and Adrian once returned for a fourth time, with a guest appearance from series one star Paul Higgins as ACC Derek Hilton.

Who is in the cast of Line of Duty series five?

With the show's popularity at an all-time high, series five of Line of Duty also attracted some huge names to the cast. Stephen Graham played the role of undercover officer DS John Corbett, with Anna Maxwell Martin joining as Detective Chief Superintendent (DCS) Patricia Carmichael, taking over from Superintendent Madeline Summers as the head of AC-3.

Tommy Jessop took over from Elliot Rosen to play the role of Terry Boyle, his first appearance since series one, and Ace Bhatti joined as PCC Rohan Sindwhani, taking over from Paula Reid as the Police and Crime Commissioner.

Series five also saw Elizabeth Rider join the cast as DCC Andrea Wise, being promoted to Deputy Chief Constable following Mike Dryden's resignation.

Who is in the cast of Line of Duty series six?

Returning to our screens three years after series five, for what was believed to be the sixth and final series, usual faces Martin, Vicky and Adrian once again returned for a sixth time, joined by a lot of new faces.

Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald joined the show as DCI Joanne Davidson, with Shalom Brune-Franklin as DC Chloe Bishop and Perry Fitzpatrick as DS Chris Lomax.

Series six also saw the return of Gregory Piper as Ryan Pilkington, but this time it was PC Ryan Pilkington, working in DCI Joanne Davidson's murder squad on the murder of Gail Vella (Andi Osho).

After his recurring roles in series one and four, Nigel Boyle returned as DSU Ian Buckells, this time working out of Hillside Lane Station, and Anna Maxwell Martin was also back as DCS Patricia Carmichael.

Who is in the cast of Line of Duty series 7?

Jed Mercurio and the BBC delighted fans in November 2025, confirming Line of Duty would be returning for a seventh series! With the show set to return to our screens in 2027, we already know Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar will return as their now famous AC-12 characters, with Robert Carlyle also joining the cast as Detective Constable Shaun Massie, a Specialist Rifle Officer.

Mark Bonnar will also reprise his role as former Deputy Chief Constable Mike Dryden, Owen Teale as Chief Constable Philip Osborne, Perry Fitzpatrick as DS Chris Lomax, and Christina Chong as DI Nicky Rogerson.

Another new face for series seven is Tom Weston-Jones, who will play Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, leader of Tactical Operations Unit 7 (TO-7). Dominic's team will be made-up of Line of Duty newcomers Laura Aikman as DC Paula Beckman, Levi Brown as DC Luke Tobin, and Amy Leigh Hickman as DC Nira Rashid.
