Meryl Streep has been confirmed to portray legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in her present day; with Anya Taylor-Joy set to play the artist in her 60s and 70s prime.

Cameron Crowe's film will follow Joni's rise from the folk clubs to global icon status, charting the stories behind iconic albums like 'Blue' and 'Clouds' and timeless tracks including 'Both Sides Now' and 'A Case of You'.

What is the Joni Mitchell biopic about?

According to the Express Tribune report, hosted on JoniMitchell.com, Anya is in talks to take on the role of Joni during the period when she released groundbreaking albums such as 'Blue' and 'Clouds'.

The film will also highlight the era in which she wrote timeless songs including 'Both Sides Now' and 'A Case of You', cementing her status as one of modern music’s defining voices. Three-time Academy Award winner Meryl will appear as present-day Joni, offering a 'layered perspective on the artist’s journey and cultural impact'.

What is Cameron Crowe’s vision for the film?

Cameron, known for Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire, is described as having a long-standing passion for music-driven storytelling. His approach to the Joni Mitchell biopic is expected to emphasise her artistry, personal struggles and influence on generations of musicians, while using a non-traditional structure to trace her story.

Joni, often hailed as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, overcame industry challenges and significant health battles, and the film aims to honour a body of work that continues to resonate globally.

When is the Joni Mitchell biopic releasing?

According to reports, the biopic is currently in pre-production, with a release date to be confirmed.

When was the biopic announced?

The film was announced in August 2025, however, Cameron has been developing the biopic for the past half-decade, per an October 2025 interview on The Late Show.

“We’ve been working on it for about four years. We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff. It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out,” Cameron said.

“She’s kept all of her costumes, all of her clothes, all of her instruments. She’s even still the landlady of her famous house in Laurel Canyon. So this is a really personal, wonderful look at her life and music".

Joni recently won the GRAMMY for Best Historical Album at the 2026 GRAMMY Awards for her box set, 'Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976–1980)'.

The singer accepted the award in person and delivered a moving speech, which you can watch below:

Cher - Untitled

Back in 2021, Cher announced she would be the subject of a new musical biopic. She was set to co-produce the project, alongside Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, who produced the film adaptations of Mamma Mia!, the second of which she starred in.

A couple of years later in August 2023, Cher revealed that she was starting over with the biopic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cher said: "We are kind of starting again. It just wasn't working out, and we needed to adjust some of the things."

However, in December 2023, the singer revealed that it was 'very hard' to cast for the biopic. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Cher said: "It is the hardest thing. I have lived too long and done so much, it is very hard to cast, and we haven't even finished the script."

U2 Netflix series - Untitled

A scripted series about U2 is in the early stages of development at Netflix, with director J.J. Abrams attached to the series, along with Anthony McCarten who wrote the script for the Bohemian Rhapsody film.

However, after Hollywood Reporter reported on the scripted series back in 2022, a further interview with Bono in May 2025 revealed that no progress has been made. As the Apple TV+ documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender was released in 2025, Bono told the publication: "No. We'll know it when it's right. We'll know it when it's ready.

"The U2 story is a bizarre one. It's a high school drama, really, slash Stranger Things. (Stories of Surrender) is the end of a four-year process of addressing the past, lifting stones, discovering a few creepy-crawlies underneath them, dealing with them, and now we move on (with new music). I hope that whatever I've uncovered in my own little opera, if it's of use to people, then I'm thrilled."

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne - Untitled

The late Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon will have their very own biopic, focusing on a 20-year period of their lives. The film is currently untitled, having been announced back in October 2021, and is set to feature Ozzy's music, with Sharon saying at the time: "Our relationship at times was often wild, insane and dangerous but it was our undying love that kept us together. We're thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures and Polygram to bring our story to the screen."

Following the singer's sad death in July 2025, it was confirmed in August that the film was still being made, with a representative for Polygram Entertainment saying: "They're currently in negotiations with a director, which could be confirmed very soon," as reported by Variety.

Madonna - Untitled

Madonna is working on a film about her life. She is co-writing and co-directing the biopic, with Julia Garner in the lead role. Although it was reported that production of the film has been put on hold, Julia opened up about it in September 2025, saying that the film is still a "work in progress", after Madonna paused it briefly for her 'Celebration World Tour' in 2023 and 2024.
