Sir David Beckham is about to add a very shiny new honour to an already crowded trophy cabinet, and this one comes with tourists and a red carpet. The former England captain is being immortalised on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with a star set to be unveiled just as the FIFA World Cup fever kicks off across North America.
With A-list friends flying in and football history on his side, David's latest moment in the spotlight is one to tune in for. Here's what's happening...
Why is David Beckham getting star on Walk of Fame?
David is receiving a star in the Sports Entertainment category in recognition of his impact on sport, entertainment and global culture.
His role in elevating soccer's profile in America and his lasting influence on sports, entertainment, and global culture make this honour especially meaningful.
Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez said: "The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome David Beckham to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
"David Beckham’s recognition with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in the Sports Entertainment category comes at a fitting moment as the United States prepares to host the FIFA World Cup.
"Beckham’s role in elevating soccer’s profile in America and his lasting influence on sports, entertainment, and global culture make this honour especially meaningful."
David's playing career spanned 20 years and saw him become the first English player to win league titles in four countries: England, Spain, the United States and France. He began at Manchester United in 1992, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 Champions League as part of the historic treble. He later played for Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain, earning 115 England caps along the way.
In 2018, he became co-owner of MLS club Inter Miami, which won its first MLS Cup last year. David made history as the first person to win the MLS Cup both as a player (with LA Galaxy in 2011 and 2012) and as an owner.
Last year, he received a knighthood for his services to sport and charity at Windsor Castle from King Charles. He has served as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef since 2005.
