Police in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire are investigating a series of burglary reports as the summer months approach, bringing warmer weather and increased risk of opportunistic crime.

Anticipating lighter nights, officers have urged residents to take precautionary measures to safeguard their homes.

Detective Chief Inspector Lauren Clough addressed the issue, stating: “I understand that burglary is an incredibly intrusive crime, and it can lead to victims feeling vulnerable in their own home.”

DCI Clough encouraged anyone witnessing suspicious activity or possessing relevant information to contact the police on 101, noting that such contributions could be vital in resolving investigations.

As part of Op Coastline, officers will engage with local communities through regular patrols, offering crime prevention advice.

DCI Clough highlighted the importance of maintaining security, especially during the warmer months when windows are often opened and residents spend time in their gardens.

The advice included ensuring doors and windows are secured when not in use to deter potential criminals.

To help protect homes from burglary, the public is advised to:

  • Keep doors and windows closed and locked when unattended, as nearly half of all burglaries involve unlocked entrances.
  • Avoid leaving valuables visible, including car keys, which might tempt thieves.
  • Consider installing burglar alarms and security lighting, both inside the home and outbuildings, to deter theft and potentially lower insurance costs.
  • Ensure sheds and garages have quality locks and hinges.
  • Fit movement-sensitive floodlights in gardens to deter intruders.

Suspicious activity should be reported via 101, or anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

In emergencies or if a crime is in progress, dial 999.
