Young volunteers are invited to join North Yorkshire Council’s Summer Reading Challenge, inspiring a love for literature among children during the school summer holidays.

Organised by the Reading Agency in partnership with Universal Music Group UK, the challenge encourages children aged four to 11 to read six library books over the break.

This year’s theme, Read to the Beat, aims to connect stories and songs, showcasing how reading and music can ignite creativity.

The book collection will feature topics including musicians, characters exploring music, cultural traditions, rhythm, and creative expression.

Volunteers aged 13 to 24 are needed to assist library staff in running and promoting the programme.

They will register children, guide their book choices, discuss their reading, award prizes, and help with library activities.

Cllr Simon Myers, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for arts and culture, said, “Once again, we are looking for volunteers to be part of the campaign in the knowledge that they are helping to inspire the next generation of readers.

Young people who help to run the challenge gain social skills and benefit from improved confidence, as well as becoming more familiar with their local library.

Like music, reading can promote creativity, and the event promises to be a lot of fun. I would encourage everybody with free time over the summer to get involved.”

To learn more about volunteering opportunities and to apply, individuals can contact their local library.
