A Scunthorpe teacher is encouraging more young women to see their future in science, technology, engineering and maths - as the green energy sector continues to grow across Lincolnshire.

Women currently make up just 25% of the UK’s STEM workforce, but with renewable technology expanding rapidly, demand for skilled workers is rising.

After more than 20 years working in manufacturing, Rebecca Chamley made the move into teaching and now lectures in green energy manufacturing at North Lindsey College.

"It’s the most rewarding job you could ever ask for," she said.

Rebecca teaches mechanical principles to students aged 16 to 19, many of whom are preparing for careers in wind energy and other sustainable technologies.

She says the shift towards renewables has made engineering an even more exciting and vital industry for young people.

“Engineering is the base of everything we do,” she explained. “We need positive role models, especially for young women, so they can see what’s possible.”

The number of female students joining her courses is rising, with women now making up around 20% of the college’s green energy cohort - a big increase from previous years.

Rebecca believes this growing diversity is good news for the sector:

“Women think differently, and when you put those men and women, those two forces together, it’s unstoppable,” she said.

For Rebecca, the goal is simple: to show girls that engineering isn’t just for men, and that their creativity and problem-solving skills are essential for tackling the challenges of the future.

“If you’ve got an enquiring mind, you’re perfect for STEM,” she added. “It’s all about finding answers to questions and shaping what comes next.”
