Scunthorpe Fans Launch Fundraiser for Kevin Keegan Statue
A fundraising campaign is underway in Scunthorpe to create a statue of football great Kevin Keegan at the place where his career began.
The Iron Trust, a supporters group for Scunthorpe United, is leading the push following Keegan’s death at the age of seventy-five.
They hope to raise enough funds for a lasting memorial at Glanford Park.
£3000 has already been pledged.
Steve Hawes from the Trust says the club is fully behind the plans:
“This would develop in collaboration with the club, and we agreed that they're fully supportive. The statue will be at Glanford Park.”
He says Keegan holds a special place in the hearts of fans and the community:
“As a ten-year-old, he was my hero many, many years ago."
"Of course, Kevin Keegan was a very good footballer, but he also achieved what he did achieve through hard work."
"And if you like, that sort of epitomises Scunthorpe as an industrial town as well."
"Everybody can look up to what you can achieve with ambition and hard work. That's why we feel that such a fitting tribute is necessary.”
Steve adds, “It's not just about the club, it's about for the wider community as well so that they're able to visit the statue, pay their respects, et cetera. Kevin was always maintaining links with the club no matter where he was.”
Fans from across the country are invited to support the fundraiser and help honour Keegan’s legacy at the home of the Iron.
