East Riding Council has received an application to build the courts at Molescroft Farm, immediately north of the town, on land currently used for agriculture.

Padel, described by the Lawn Tennis Association as “the fastest growing sport in the world”, is a racquet sport combining elements of tennis and squash. It is usually played in doubles on enclosed courts surrounded by mesh and glass walls.

The latest proposal comes just weeks after separate plans were submitted for three padel courts at Norwood Recreation Park, including the conversion of two existing tennis courts.

Planning documents submitted to the council state the Molescroft Farm site is located north of the existing nursery building and is “relatively level, well-screened by mature boundary planting, and visually contained by existing buildings and landscape features.”

As well as the four courts, the development would include a new car park with 16 standard spaces, two accessible bays and two electric vehicle charging points.

If approved, the facility would operate between 6am and 10pm, with access provided from Grange Lane via Grange Way (A1035).

One nearby resident has already objected to the plans through the council’s planning portal.

Among the concerns raised was the potential noise impact, including what the resident described as the “repetitive gunshot sound of padel balls hitting the court, glass and mesh walls from early morning until late into the evening”.

The proposed sports development site is also adjacent to land earmarked for the planned 40MW Molescroft Solar Farm.

The solar farm proposal could generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of almost 24,000 homes if approved.
