Mum of murdered Hull student urges women to prioritise safety during festive nights out
Lisa Squire shares advice to women and updates on her campaign
The mother of murdered Hull student Libby Squire has urged women to work together to stay safe when heading out during the festive party season.
Libby was sexually assaulted and killed after a night out with friends in Hull in 2019.
Her mum, Lisa, is encouraging women to speak up, stay together, and report any offences to help create change.
Lisa said:
"I still find it astonishing that we're still thinking that we need to stay safe in 2025; it's ridiculous, but it's not going to change overnight. But I think if we stand up, we speak up, and we stay together when we're out, then that will help. There is that phrase, safety in numbers. It's there for a reason, and we shouldn't have to, but until the day that we don't have to, then we need to keep ourselves safe.
"I do find it astonishing that in 2025 women are still thinking about the same things that I was thinking about in the eighties. It's sad, but I think there is a change. There is a change, but it'll take a while."
Reporting offences and seeking help
Lisa emphasised the importance of reporting offences, even non-contact ones, and seeking support when needed.
"If it's a non-contact offence, definitely report it. You can go to different agencies for help and advice and talk about it. Don't hide it, it's not their fault. And if you don't get help from one agency, find another, keep going. You are worth more than that."
Campaign updates
Lisa also shared updates on her campaign work, which includes efforts to change laws surrounding sexual offences.
"My campaign is going quite well. There's a law that's nearly been changed, Any man that gets arrested and charged and convicted of a non-contact sexual offence will go on the sex offenders register. So that's massive. The rest of my campaign work is going well bu there's still lots to do though."
Lisa remains dedicated to raising awareness and striving for change in the name of her daughter and other victims.
