Last updated 16th Jun 2026
A joint operation by Market Weighton's Neighbourhood Policing Team and East Riding of Yorkshire Council Trading Standards led to the seizure of illegal tobacco and cigarettes.
On Thursday, 11th June 2026, officers carried out a visit to two business premises in the area.
During the operation, a car believed to be linked to a nearby shop was identified, resulting in the discovery and seizure of approximately 4.3kg of suspected illicit rolling tobacco and about 5,500 illegal cigarettes.
The estimated value of the rolling tobacco is approximately £10,000, while the illicit cigarettes are worth around £1,750.
Counterfeit products can pose significant health risks as they do not undergo the necessary safety checks required for legally sold goods.
Such activities may fund organised crime, potentially involving cross-border operations.
The joint effort serves as an effective example of disruption and removal of illegal products, ensuring community safety in Market Weighton.
Residents are encouraged to report concerns regarding counterfeit tobacco or vapes by calling 101 for non-emergencies or speaking directly to officers.
Reports can also be made anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
