Hull City Council has announced the temporary closure of the Wright Street junction with Freetown Way as part of a significant investment to improve key travel routes in the city.

The closure will take effect from 19th October 2026 and remain in place until March 2027, with diversions via George Street, Bond Street, and Albion Street, while left-turning vehicles into Wright Street will use Ferensway, Spencer Street, and Prospect Street.

This upgrade aims to restore two lanes of traffic and provide improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians on Freetown Way.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, the cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, highlighted the progress since construction began in September and emphasized efforts to minimize disruptions.

"We recognise that closing Wright Street while this work takes place will cause some disruption, particularly for people who regularly travel through this part of the city. We will work with the contractor to keep that disruption to a minimum and make sure clear diversions and traffic management are in place."

Motorists are reminded not to overtake cyclists in areas under construction, and pedestrians are advised to follow diversions and use signalled crossing points for safety.

Narrow lanes will continue on Freetown Way to reduce the impact on traffic.

Hull City Council plans to invite bids for the remaining works, with a contractor expected to be appointed early in the New Year to ensure swift progress.
