The proposed closures have sparked concern over the impact on children’s health, wellbeing, and the quality of school meals, as well as the effect on local staff.

Cllr Paul Harper, a former PE teacher in Hull, said:

“Hot meals made on-site are far better than food brought in from miles away."

"These kitchens are essential for our children’s nutrition, and it’s unacceptable for Horizon to put cost-cutting ahead of their wellbeing.”

Finn Anderson, Labour candidate for West Carr, added:

“These proposals are a disgrace for local children and for the staff affected, many of whom work part-time and are valued members of our community."

"We fully support the GMB union’s campaign to defend these jobs and ensure children continue to receive good quality meals.”

Hull Labour councillors will join the GMB demonstration at Cleeve Primary School on Friday 13 March at 9am and are encouraging the public to sign the petition to protect school kitchens: Hands Off Our Kitchens

The councillors say keeping kitchens open supports both the wellbeing of children and the local community, ensuring schools remain places where children are properly nourished and staff are valued.
