Iconic maritime feature reinstated after essential repairs
Hull's Guildhall Time Ball is set to be reinstalled on 1st August, restoring a unique landmark to the city’s skyline following vital repairs.
Originally installed in 1915, the Time Ball has assisted mariners in setting their chronometers by rising daily at specified times.
Historical significance and restoration efforts
The Time Ball, weighing 50kg, was the only one of its kind in the UK.
It underwent a £400,000 refurbishment backed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Hull City Council in 2023 but was removed again for repair in July 2025.
Smith of Derby worked meticulously with overseas manufacturers to repair the intricate mechanism, utilising advanced magnetic technology for its operation.
The company is covering the entire cost of the necessary repairs and components.
On its return to The Guildhall tower, a 48-tonne crane will be utilised for its installation.
Installation and road closures
Installation is scheduled for 1st August, with a road closure planned on Lowgate outside The Guildhall from 8am to 4pm to ensure safety.
This schedule is weather-dependent and aims to minimise disruption following nearby roadworks.
Internal work and comprehensive testing will follow the reinstallation, paving the way for the Time Ball's commissioning.
Cllr Mike Ross and Cllr Hester Bridges have highlighted the ball's significance and expressed satisfaction with the repairs.
