An event in Queen Victoria Square, Hull, is set to celebrate the rollout of new electric buses on Clean Air Day, Thursday, 18th June.

Organised by the Hull Bus Alliance, the showcase offers residents and bus users a chance to discover the city's new eco-friendly transportation and engage with representatives from Hull City Council, Stagecoach East Midlands, and East Yorkshire Buses.

Clean Air Day, the UK's largest campaign aimed at raising awareness about air pollution, offers an ideal platform for highlighting efforts to improve air quality.

Visitors will be able to examine a new electric bus from each operator from 10am to 3pm.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo from Hull City Council expressed enthusiasm for the transition to electric buses:

“These new vehicles are having a transformative impact throughout Hull, providing quieter and more comfortable journeys as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.”

Hull and East Riding will see a total of 82 electric buses replacing older diesel models, anticipated to account for almost a third of all bus journeys in the city.

Stuart Fillingham of East Yorkshire Buses and Matt Cranwell of Stagecoach East Midlands emphasize the environmental benefits of electric transport, underscoring the role buses can play in reducing emissions and enhancing community sustainability.

The rollout follows a successful joint bid by Hull City Council and partners, securing nearly £10 million from the ZEBRA2 project to fund charging facilities and purchase vehicles.

Electric buses offer smoother rides with rechargeable batteries, lower maintenance requirements and improved efficiency, contributing to a cleaner environment.

The event will also feature participation from the Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership and TransPennine Express representatives.
