Hull council strips Mandelson of high steward role
The fallout centres on allegations around the former UK ambassador to the US
A top ceremonial title in Hull has been stripped from Peter Mandelson after weeks of controversy.
The city’s Liberal Democrat leader moved a motion in a full council meeting today (18 September), officially cutting Mandelson’s ties to the area.
The fallout centres on allegations around the former UK ambassador to the US.
Sir Keir Starmer is facing the prospect of further questions about his leadership after sacking Lord Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington over his links to the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
The Prime Minister on Monday said he felt "angry" after being forced to sack Lord Mandelson.
But he is facing questions about his decision to back the peer at Prime Minister's Questions last week while knowing that further revelations about Lord Mandelson's relationship with US financier Epstein would come to light.
Since then, councillors in Hull have just taken the rare step of removing Peter Mandelson as High Steward of Hull.
The Liberal Democrat leader Mike Ross says recent revelations about Mandelson’s conduct were enough to act now.
He told the meeting Mandelson is not fit to represent Hull, or the nation, in any capacity.
The leader also criticised Keir Starmer’s handling of the situation, saying people deserve answers from Labour about what they knew and when.
Mandelson’s name has now been formally removed from one of the city’s highest honorary roles.
