Hull's A63 Castle Street project clinches top engineering award
National Highways praised for tackling complex infrastructure challenges
The A63 Castle Street improvement project in Hull has been honoured with an award for excellence in engineering at the UK Ground Engineering Awards in London.
Winning in the category of the UK Project with a Geotechnical Value over £10M, the scheme triumphed over competitors such as a road improvement initiative in Cornwall and a Scottish windfarm project.
The judges highlighted the innovative design and construction of the infrastructure, recognising it as a significant national project with exceptional challenges in its build.
Complex Project Execution
Commencing in 2020, the £355 million A63 Castle Street scheme faced delays due to challenging ground conditions, moving its completion from 2025 to 2026.
The project features the creation of a new split-level junction, including the lowering of a major road section via an underpass.
Discussing the complex nature of the engineering, Frances Oliver, senior project manager at National Highways, voiced her pride in the team’s achievement.
“Construction of the A63 underpass was one of the most complex engineering challenges in the UK, and we are delighted that the efforts of everyone who worked on the scheme have been recognised with this award,” she said.
Economic and Community Impact
The redesigned road layout has significantly improved connectivity between Hull's city centre, port, and leisure sites, positively influencing the local economy and tourism.
Oliver acknowledged the beneficial outcomes already evident from the infrastructure enhancements.
The UK Ground Engineering Awards also recognised various other projects and organisations in categories such as Digital Innovation, Equipment Innovation, and Sustainability.
For example, National Highways, in collaboration with Arup and others, received accolades for their contribution to the A63 Castle Street Improvement.
These awards celebrate the ongoing innovation and expertise within the UK's ground engineering sector.
