Grimsby’s bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture is gathering momentum, with supporters from across the country offering to help the campaign.

Councillor Hayden Dawkins, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and the visitor economy, says the response so far has been overwhelming.

“People that were born here that have done well for themselves – like Ella Henderson – have all backed the bid, and that means a lot to local people," he said.

“We’ve been offered services from all over the place, all over the country, dare I say.”

The town is currently at the expression of interest stage, with potentially hundreds of places across the UK expected to put themselves forward before a shortlist is drawn up.

If successful, the title could bring millions of pounds in investment, as well as a year-long programme of cultural events.

Councillor Dawkins believes the bid is an opportunity to showcase parts of Grimsby’s identity that often go unnoticed.

“We’ve got loads of hidden culture in Grimsby. We’ve only probably in the last five years actually started tapping into it.”

“Our culture goes back a lot further than just fish,” he said.

Councillor Dawkins says the bid could also help boost pride in the town.

“We’re always trying to make people proud of Grimsby and what it’s got to offer.”
