Five parks in North Lincolnshire awarded Green Flag
Five of North Lincolnshire’s most loved parks have been recognised among the country’s best
There are now five parks across North Lincolnshire that have the prestigious status of being Green Flag-awarded. This comes while the council is helping fund an allotment expansion in New Holland and a ward councillor has thanked a garden centre for helping spruce up the appearance outside a Scunthorpe medical centre.
The Humber Bridge Viewing area in Barton-upon-Humber is the new Green Flag Award recipient in the local authority. It joins Baysgarth Park in Barton, and Central Park, Jubilee Park and Woodland Memorial Gardens in Scunthorpe in having the Green Flag status.
For an area to receive the Green Flag award, it has to meet criteria covering the likes of litter and waste management, conservation of natural features, wildlife and flora, and to be a welcoming, safe and accessible environment. Community involvement is also one of the eight sections spaces are independently assessed on.
Jubilee Park has retained its Green Flag status, with the assessment of it recognising the exceptionally active Friends of Jubilee Parks group. Kingsway with Lincoln Gardens Ward Cllr Helen Rayner (Labour) stated: “We are highly delighted for the local community who have put so much time, effort and energy themselves into improving both parks for the benefit of all, but especially young people.”
Barton Ward Cllr Paul Vickers (Conservative) is also chair of the Friends of Baysgarth Park group and said it was “excellent news” to have two Green Flag-parks in the town. He added of the Friends of Baysgarth Park: “Their dedication makes a real difference and has played an important part in achieving this recognition.” It is not just Green Flag park statuses that have featured in recent North Lincolnshire green developments.
Planters spruce up outside medical centre
Brumby Ward Cllr Ellen Dew (Reform UK) has expressed her gratitude to Silica Lodge Garden Centre for sponsoring two planters outside West Common Lane Medical Centre. “On one of my walkabouts in the Brumby Ward, with officers from ONGO, I remarked on the number of planters in the Westcliff area that were full of weeds and which gave the area an unloved appearance,” said Cllr Dew.
“I approached a very helpful lady at Silica Lodge Garden Centre and enquired as to whether they might be prepared to sponsor the two planters at the bottom of West Common Lane by providing the plants for them. They agreed, and the next day I was able to pick up the plants.”
She said they added fresh compost and planted up the planters, “which as you can see, really brighten up the area. I’d really like to thank Silica Lodge for their kind donation and would encourage any other person/business who would like to sponsor one of the planters to get in touch.”
New Holland allotment space expanding
New Holland Parish Council is expanding its allotment space to meet local demand, with a £15,000 community grant from North Lincolnshire Council aiding this. The parish council has also invested £21,213 of its own funds.
The new site will provide much-needed outdoor space for people of all ages to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers. “This is exactly the kind of project residents tell us matters to them, and we’re committed to continuing to deliver for local people right across North Lincolnshire,” said council leader Cllr Rob Waltham (Conservative – Brigg and Wolds) earlier this month.
Other recent projects to be awarded Community Grant Fund cash in North Lincolnshire include £10,000 to Worlaby Parish Council and just over £6,500 to Redbourne Parish Council for playpark upgrades.
