Goole Library to receive £450,000 refurbishment
That's thanks to investment from both the Government and the council
The East Riding library in Goole is set to receive a near half-million-pound refurbishment thanks to investment from both the Government and the council. East Riding Council has announced that funding has been secured from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) Libraries Improvement Fund.
The library will receive £300,000 from the DCMS, via the Arts Council, and a further £150,000 of match funding from East Riding Council.
During the transformation, the library will be redesigned, including upgrades to fixtures and fittings, and the creation of new children’s areas and flexible spaces. There will also be a public consultation, to gather public feedback on the improvements.
It is hoped the changes will lead to an increased footfall to the library and provide more learning opportunities for the local community. The council say the refurbishment will also provide opportunities to encourage improved health and wellbeing.
Work on the library is expected to begin next year, building on the legacy of Goole’s bicentenary celebrations. This year marks 200 years of England’s largest inland port, and there is an ongoing program of events and activities is underway to mark the town’s history and achievements. This includes events at Goole library, museum and other cultural venues.
Cllr Nick Coultish, East Riding Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, and tourism, said: “This is fantastic news for Goole library. It will bring huge benefits to the library, helping it to serve as an innovative and accessible community space.”
“This funding will play a key role in helping the library provide more services to local residents, and we look forward to the refurbishment getting underway.”
The East Riding town has also recently seen the reopening of Goole Market Hall. Earlier this month the nineteenth-century hall was reopened by York-based brewery, Brew York, under its “Brew+” brand.
