Businesses disrupted by the complete closure of Pier Gardens in Cleethorpes are not going to receive compensation for any loss of earnings.

The green space has been shut for renovations since February 2026.

It is one of three projects backed by the government's Levelling Up Fund, and is expected to be finished within 15 months.

New features will include a skate park, water features, and a small amphitheatre.

Cllr Malcolm Morland, the Labour and Co-Op representative for Croft Baker Ward, asked a scrutiny panel why the whole area has to be fenced off rather than being worked on in phases.

But, according to leaders on North East Lincolnshire Council, the contractor responsible for the work has identified 'extensive risks' that would prevent safe access to the gardens.

While they stated compensation for affected businesses will not be available, there will be extra signs to let the public know that they are still open.
