British Steel continues to be a pivotal force in the UK’s economy, according to a recent report, underscoring its extensive impact on jobs and regional prosperity.

Operating in Scunthorpe, Teesside, Skinningrove, and various other sites, British Steel employs over 4,000 people and supplies high-quality iron and steel products globally.

These products are instrumental in constructing world-famous skylines, rail infrastructure, and power facilities, reflecting British Steel's role in supporting national security and economic development.

The report reveals that British Steel contributes over £1bn to the UK economy annually, alongside supporting tens of thousands of jobs through its supply chain.

In Yorkshire and the Humber alone, British Steel's operations contribute £448m to UK GDP.

The company is strategically important for infrastructure delivery and economic growth, employing workers in some of the UK's most deprived areas.

Approximately 48% of its procurement spending supports businesses in the 20% most deprived areas in England.

British Steel also fosters young talent, employing 158 apprentices to ensure the continuity of steelmaking expertise.

Looking to the future, British Steel is poised to transition towards low-carbon steel production, offering significant decarbonisation opportunities and potential industry regeneration.

Despite facing economic challenges, the demand for steel is expected to grow by 55% by 2050, driven by traditional and emerging sectors like aerospace, solar, and wind power.

Allan Bell, Interim CEO of British Steel, said:

“We have been contributing to the prosperity of the UK for 150 years, and we are ready to do so for another 150.”

Bell emphasised the company's commitment to maintaining its contribution to UK prosperity for another 150 years, with support from the government and investments.

British Steel's footprint extends beyond direct operations, reflecting the economic and social impact across its supply chains and customer sectors, supporting industries crucial for the UK's infrastructure and manufacturing.
