A 999 call handler has helped a woman give birth to a baby girl in a car on the way to hospital.

The call came into the police Force Control Room on the morning of Thursday 29th October 2026, when a call handler named only as Stef took a call from a man whose partner was giving birth in the car.

Police said the control room receives hundreds of calls in a single 24-hour period, but that this is not a situation call handlers would normally have to deal with.

Stef got the man to pull over safely into a pub car park and reassured both parents throughout the call.

While she did this, she asked a colleague to call for an ambulance and for the nearest police unit to go to the scene to offer moral support while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

The baby girl was born while Stef was still on the phone, and she made sure both the baby and her mother were safe and well until paramedics arrived to take over.

Police said the baby was healthy, and she was taken to hospital with her mum and dad.
