Armed officers and a police helicopter combined to arrest two suspects following a reported sighting of a firearm in Nottingham last night (13th May).

The police were called after a weapon described as a rifle with a telescopic scope on it was spotted by a member of the public.

It was reportedly seen in the hands of two individuals on the roof of a building in Radford Road, New Basford, around 8.05pm.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Officers arrived at the scene minutes later, with armed police carrying out searches on the ground, while a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter provided support overhead.

This resulted in two boys, aged 15 and 16, being located and arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Detective Chief Inspector Claire Gould, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“As shown by our robust response to this incident, we will always treat reports of this nature seriously and act accordingly.

“This will have no doubt caused great alarm to the person who called this in as well as to the surrounding community, but we hope the swift way we reacted provides the public with some reassurance.

“Within a few minutes of attending the scene, officers from our Armed Policing Unit, assisted by our colleagues at NPAS, managed to locate two suspects and bring them under arrest.

“Searches are still ongoing to locate the weapon we were initially called about, although we currently believe it to be an imitation firearm."
