Thousands of Sikhs in Leicester for Nagar Kirtan

Thousands of Sikhs will be taking to Leicester’s streets for a religious procession.
The event, known as Nagar Kirtan, traditionally sees a huge number of followers taking part on the walk between two of the city’s best-known Sikh temples, or Gurdwaras.
The procession will set off from Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, on East Park Road, at about 11.30am and will make its way across the city to arrive at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Holy Bones, at around 2.30pm.
The route will include East Park Road, St Peter’s Road, Sparkenhoe Street, Swain Street, St George’s Way, Charles Street, Humberstone Gate, Clock Tower, East Gates, High Street, St Nicholas Place and finally to St Nicholas Circle, before finishing at Holy Bones.
Rolling road closures will be in place along the route to enable the procession to pass safely.
Some bus services will also need to follow alternative routes, for a short time only, as the procession makes its way across the city.
There will also be some parking restrictions in streets near East Park Road, including parts of Leicester Street, Rosebery Street and Nottingham Street, along with Holy Bones, Welles Street and part of Great Central Street.
Information signs will be going up on main routes into the city ahead of the procession to warn drivers, while the city council’s Area Traffic Control team will be providing regular traffic and travel updates.
