Man arrested after disturbance in Southwell
Police cordoned off Queen Street and roads were closed during the incident
A 50-year-old man has been arrested following a disturbance at a house on Queen Street, Southwell, yesterday afternoon.
Police, including armed officers, attended after reports of damage being caused at the address and concerns for the man’s safety shortly before 12pm on Friday.
Negotiators spent several hours speaking with the man while surrounding roads were closed and the area cordoned off. Officers worked to resolve the situation, which ended safely just before 6pm with the reopening of roads.
Four schools nearby initiated precautionary lockdowns and these were lifted once the situation was under control.
Chief Superintendent Nick Waldram of Nottinghamshire Police said: “This was a challenging situation for all the officers involved, and it is thanks to their training and professionalism that it was safely concluded without anyone coming to harm.
“Keeping people safe is always our number one priority. Although this was an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the public or any school pupils, we recognise that incidents of this nature can be unsettling for families and the wider community and we will continue to have police patrols in the area to reassure people."
Chief Superintendent Waldram added that armed officers were initially deployed as a precaution based on an unconfirmed report suggesting a weapon might be present. However, no weapon was found on the man or in the property.
Neighbourhood officers will be working with the schools in the coming days to address any questions or concerns.
The man has been arrested on suspicion of affray, criminal damage and recall to prison, as investigations continue.
