Father and son duo take on Nottingham's first ever Soapbox race
Nottingham's Super Soapbox challenge gets underway today
Nottingham's first ever Soapbox race takes place in the city today (May 10th) with teams gathering in Old Market Square to put their homemade karts to the test.
Amateurs will bring their motor-less vehicles to the East Midlands, hoping to keep them in one piece as they navigate ramps and hay bales in Nottingham City Centre.
What is Soapbox racing?
Amateur teams build and race their own karts on a steep, downhill course. The karts move thanks to gravity with vehicles in the past reaching speeds of 26 mph on tracks.
For the Nottingham race, in particular, we know there will be a four-metre high ramp into Old Market Square.
Teams of around four people will need to build their kart to withstand obstacles while optimising speed.
Rob Eaton and his Dad, Steve, are racing today with their homemade kart. He told us how he put it together: "I have been working on it since November.
"It is screws and bolts and bits of wood all glued together, that is all it is. I am confident it will stay in one piece.
"I could not have done this without my Dad, he has been a huge help for me. My Dad has been the main builder and I have funded a lot of it. For that reason, I will be sat in the drivers seat.
'A dream of mine'
"Working in motorsport has always been a dream of mine. Ever since I was little, I have always been interested in it, with reaching Formula One being the goal.
"Getting to build and work on the soapbox has been a fun little project that goes alongside all of that.
"I will be taking this far more seriously than any other race weekend I have been involved in. It is half the price of motor racing, but twice the dignity lost, if you end up in a hay bale," he said.
The whole event is raising money for the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance charity, and their lifesaving work.
Nottingham's Super Soapbox challenge is free for all spectators.
The first race will begin at 11am with round two at 1pm and prizes given out from 4:30pm.
