A police cordon is in place following a serious sexual assault in Nottingham.

Officers were called to an alleyway in Canal Street just before 8pm last night.

A 43-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and taken into custody.

The victim, a 19-year-old woman, is being supported by police staff specifically trained to support victims of sexual offences.

Detective Inspector Amy Revill from Nottinghamshire Police's Public Protection Unit said:

"We take reports of sexual offences and violence against women and girls extremely seriously.

"We are now investigating this incident and we need to urgently hear from anyone with information.

"This incident happened in a busy area of the city and in daylight, so we are hopeful that witnesses come forward."
