Police update on injuries of pedestrians who were hit by car in Derby's Friar Gate

Officers say the incident happened around 9:30 last night and that seven people were taken to hospital

A man has been arrested after a car hit and injured pedestrians in Derby city centre yesterday.

Derbyshire Police said a number of people had been hurt, some of them seriously, but that the injuries are not life-threatening.

We also now know that ambulances transported a total of seven people to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The car believed to be involved was stopped after the incident in Friar Gate, at about 9.30pm.

The driver, a man in his 30s, who is originally from India, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody.

The force says:

"The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and we are keeping an open mind as to the motives."

Police have asked anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift in Derby around the time of the incident to get in touch.

An earlier statement from officers said: “Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.”

Friar Gate is completely closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside up to Ford Street and it's expected to be closed for some time with people are asked to avoid the area.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed to us that they received a call at 9:31pm yesterday, Saturday 28th March, to reports of a medical emergency. Adding:

"We sent a number of resources including three paramedics in three ambulance cars, seven ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team.

"We transported seven patients between Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre."
