Prime Minister Andy Burnham today highlighted Derby's crucial role in his Labour Government's vision to reindustrialise Britain.

Burnham, alongside Chancellor John Healey, visited Rolls-Royce’s Learning and Career Development Centre in Derby following Wednesday's Budget. During the visit, they announced a £2.5 billion agreement with Rolls-Royce, aimed at developing cutting-edge, cleaner, and more efficient jet engines over the next decade.

The Prime Minister was joined by Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward, and Derby South MP Baggy Shanker. The delegation toured the facility, interacted with apprentices, and discussed how the new investment would impact their careers and lives in the East Midlands.

Speaking after the visit, Burnham said, “Derby is at the heart of our drive to reindustrialise this country and this £2.5 billion agreement with Rolls-Royce puts the whole of the East Midlands in a strong position for the next decade."

Derby South MP Baggy Shanker emphasised Labour's commitment, stating, “This £2.5 billion joint investment shows Labour’s ambition for Derby and for British industry. It will support thousands of jobs and develop more efficient aircraft engines, while protecting the expertise Britain needs for its defence."
