A man's convicted of the manslaughter of his housemate in Leicester

A man has been convicted of the manslaughter of his housemate after he was fatally stabbed in October last year.

Amritpal Singh was found guilty yesterday (Thursday 26 March) of the death of Amit Kumar following a two-week trial at Leicester Crown Court.

He is due to be sentenced on Wednesday 15 April.

Amit Kumar, 32, died in the early hours of 5 October 2025 after being stabbed by Singh at the house they shared with two other housemates in Sawley Street, Leicester.

The incident occurred following an argument between the men who had both been drinking.

Singh fled the address moments after paramedics arrived, taking the knife with him.

Detectives carried out an extensive review of CCTV footage in the area – which proved crucial in piecing together Singh’s actions immediately after the attack.

Just a matter of minutes after leaving the scene, CCTV captured Singh throwing the knife into the rear garden of a property in Osmaston Road.

Moments later, the same cameras captured the 44-year-old using a wheelie bin to climb into the garden to retrieve it.

He can then be seen walking along the road with the knife in his left hand.

The vital piece of evidence, which led to the knife being discovered, was captured on CCTV in Rowsley Street.

When detectives reviewed the footage, in the top left-hand corner of the camera at 1.39am, they were able to just make out Singh opening a wheelie bin and appearing to place the knife inside.

Officers were immediately dispatched to search the bin and the knife was found in a black bin bag that had been torn open.

After discarding the knife, Singh continued walking to a friend’s house nearby, where he was arrested from at 9.19am that morning.

After being arrested Singh claimed he was defending himself and he had stabbed Mr Kumar by accident.

Singh was found not guilty of the murder of Mr Kumar but guilty of manslaughter.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Tim Lindley, said:

“Amritpal Singh claimed he stabbed Mr Kumar by accident, but he had told the other two housemates not to mention there had been a fight.

“This makes it clear that he knew exactly what he had done and made the decision to leave the scene with the knife before police arrived.

“Once he left the house it is clear from the CCTV that his aim was to get rid of the weapon. He threw the knife into a garden before retrieving it and then disposing of it in a wheelie bin.

“By putting it in the bin I think he hoped it would not be found before the bins were emptied but luckily this was captured on camera and officers were able to recover it.

“Capturing and examining CCTV is vital in the work we do and had the disposal of the knife not been recorded we may not have found it. I have pleased the defendant has now been held accountable for his actions.”
