A 49-year-old man whose death is subject to an ongoing murder investigation has been named as Simon Geary.
Police were called to George Toon Court in Brook Street just after 11.45am yesterday (23 December) following a report a man had been found unresponsive inside a flat.
Officers attended with the East Midlands Ambulance Service, but Mr Geary was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say, from enquiries carried out so far, it is believed Mr Geary was assaulted inside the flat.
In a statement, Mr Geary’s family said: “Simon was a much-loved son and brother. The support he has given our family will never be forgotten. He was a kind caring soul who served his country in the Army and we are so proud of what he achieved in his career.
“We would ask the public to please respect our privacy at this very difficult time.”
A 49-year-old man who has been arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), is the senior investigating officer. He said: “Officers will remain in the area over the coming days to carry out further enquiries and establish what happened.
“This includes examining CCTV and speaking to residents in the area.
“Though I know people will be spending time with loved ones over the coming days, if you have any information that could help us, please do come forward. Anything you’re able to tell us – no matter how insignificant you think it may be – could assist our investigation.”
