Nottingham dog trainer's advice on keeping pets cool in the heat
An amber heat health alert is in place across the East Midlands
Temperatures are set to rise in the East Midlands today and a Nottingham dog trainer has advice on how to keep our pets cool in the warm conditions.
It is expected to be 30 degrees celsius in parts of the East Midlands, according to the MET Office.
Tuesday was the hottest day in May on record for both England and Wales, according to the Met Office, with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 35.1C and Cardiff Bute Park reaching 32.9C.
An amber heat health alert is in place for the East Midlands until 5pm today (28th May).
It means demand on health and care services is likely to rise. According to the UK Health Security Agency there may be an increase in deaths, especially among older adults and people with existing health conditions.
'Feed dogs their hydration'
Faz is a dog trainer in Nottingham. He has this advice for keeping our pets cool: "You can feed dogs their hydration through fruit, such as apples, banana, spinach and cucumber.
"Watch out for your dog looking confused, vomiting, being lethargic or drooling excessively as they may be overheating.
"You should get a fan and hang a cold, wet towel over the fan so that it is spraying moisture out as well as cold air," he said.
How else to keep my dog cool?
Further advice from the RSPCA includes:
- Only walk your dogs in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler
- Provide constant access to shade both indoors and outdoors
- Use pet-safe suncream on exposed parts of their skin, such as their nose
- Put ice cubes in your dogs water bowl and make sure there is always water available
