A man has been jailed for 16 months following a high-speed police pursuit that resulted in a fatality late last year.

The chase involved a BMW X5 towing a caravan reported stolen from Oakerthorpe early on Saturday, 14th February.

Adrian Osiecki, 34, was driving the vehicle in a series of dangerous manoeuvres, including ramming police cars and attempting to evade capture.

The incident culminated when the caravan was unclipped, and the vehicle sped away, crashing into a wall on a bridge in Main Street, Egginton.

Osiecki fled but was soon arrested in nearby fields.

A second man in the car escaped into the flooded Egginton Brook and later died.

In court, Osiecki, a Polish national from Friars Road, Coventry, pleaded guilty to several charges, including dangerous driving and drug-driving.

He was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on 15th September, receiving a driving ban for two years.

Detective Inspector Simon English expressed satisfaction with the sentencing, emphasising the commitment to tackle dangerous driving.

The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the circumstances of the pursuit.
