Leicestershire Police has made what it has called a 'mandatory referral' to the police watchdog over its initial response to a missing persons report.

On Thursday afternoon, officers searching for missing 40 year old Shahab Uddin discovered a body near to the A6 in Loughborough, near the One Ash roundabout.

The decision to refer to the Independent Office for Police Conduct follows an internal review.

An investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the death, which is currently being treated as 'unexplained'.

In a statement, Leicestershire Police said: "While formal identification is yet to take place, the family of Mr Uddin have been informed.

"The force’s thoughts are with his family at this tragic time and full support is being provided by Family Liaison Officers.

"Specialist teams led by police search advisors, Tactical Support Teams, police dogs and Leicestershire Search and Rescue were all involved in the search supported by members of the family and community, along with the deployment of the force drone and the National Police Air Service to conduct aerial searches.

"The operation was further supported by specialist officers from surrounding forces.

"A public portal was set up and, thanks to the response from the community, a significant number of lines of enquiry, including multiple possible sightings across the local area, were generated and acted upon during the investigation."
