Work to improve the junction of Merrill Way, Chellaston Road and Boulton Lane in Derby is set to start on Monday 5th January 2026.

The seven-month scheme aims to enhance transport links along the A514 Chellaston Road, benefiting drivers, bus users, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The project will focus on increasing capacity at the junction to improve traffic flow and reliability for bus journeys. It will also include new cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings to support active travel in the area.

These upgrades are a key part of the South Derby Growth Zone development plans, aimed at creating a more efficient access route to the new site.

The £3m project is being funded by the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), alongside contributions from developers Infinity Park Derby LLP.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability, said:

"This scheme promises real benefits for the area, providing extra capacity and improved efficiency for road traffic, and a boost for sustainable travel. I’m delighted that work will soon be starting as we continue to build towards a greener, better-connected Derby.

"It’s great that the Mayor of the East Midlands has been able to support this project, as part of their commitment to improving transport in Derby."

Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, added:

" Improving transport connections across Derby and our region is a key priority for me, and this investment in the A514 junction is a great example of that commitment in action.

"By increasing capacity, supporting reliable public transport, and making it safer and easier for people to walk and cycle, this scheme will support local growth while helping to create a more sustainable transport network for the future."

Additional funding from EMCCA is also supporting upgrades to London Road, a major route into the city.

Surveys on London Road, between Deadman’s Avenue and Brighton Road, will take place in February 2026. These surveys will help develop plans to improve infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and buses in the area.
