Fire which killed Derbyshire pensioner likely caused by cigarette

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said they think he fell asleep in a chair while smoking

An investigation by emergency services has revealed the likely cause of a fatal fire in Mickleover, was a cigarette.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said they think the 70-year-olld fell asleep while smoking in a chair in his bungalow.

Emergency services rescued him from his burning bungalow on Olton Road in Mickleover, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire happened on the 30th July 2025 before 7 o'clock in the morning.

An investigation revealed there were no smoke alarms in the 70-year-old's bungalow. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue are urging you to check you have smoke alarms installed.

Firefighters and Community Safety Officers visited the local area following the incident to speak to residents and offer fire safety advice and reassurance.

Smoking safety advice, from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service:

  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Use a proper ashtray - never a wastepaper basket.
  • Don't leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe lying around. They can easily fall over and start a fire.
  • Ensure you have a smoke alarm fitted on every floor of your home (on the ceiling).
  • Test your smoke alarm every week.
