Families gather to remember Nottingham attack victims three years on
Friends and families will gather in Nottingham to remember Grace O'Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber and Ian Coates
Today, Nottingham remembers Grace O'Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber and Ian Coates as families mark the third anniversary of the attacks that claimed their lives.
Families of the Nottingham attacks victims will today (13 June) retrace their loved ones' final steps. A walk to Ilkeston Road at lunchtime will honour the lives of University of Nottingham students Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, who were killed on 13 June 2023.
The three victims were fatally stabbed by Valdo Calocane, who was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Following the killings, Calocane also attempted to murder three other people.
Among those seriously injured were Sharon Miller and Wayne Birkett, who were struck by a van driven by Calocane later that same morning.
Today's anniversary comes just days after hearings at the Nottingham attacks public inquiry concluded, with the final evidence heard on Friday 5 June.
The inquiry, which opened in London on 23 February, has heard testimony from police officers, healthcare professionals, survivors, victims and bereaved families. It has examined the circumstances surrounding the attacks and the events leading up to 13 June 2023.
In its final stages, the inquiry heard claims that survivors of Calocane's attacks were denied some of their basic rights as victims. Over the course of the proceedings, evidence was received from 164 witnesses.
Closing statements are scheduled for September, before inquiry chairwoman Deborah Taylor is expected to publish her findings and recommendations next year.
As Nottingham marks three years since the attacks, tributes continue to be paid to Grace O'Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber and Ian Coates, whose lives were cut tragically short.
Valdo Calocane is currently serving an indefinite hospital order for the attacks.
