Businesses across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are being encouraged to support young people through a new regional campaign.

Generation East Midlands, championed by East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward, is calling on employers to make practical pledges to help young people build confidence, skills and connections.

Pledges could include work experience, workplace visits, mentoring, apprenticeships, entry-level jobs or interview support. Businesses can choose a commitment that suits their organisation or create their own.

Mayor Claire Ward said:

“Supporting young people to shine is all of our business: and I am calling on our local businesses to do their bit.”

She said too many young people miss out on opportunities to experience the workplace and make connections with employers.

Supporting the region’s future workforce

The campaign is part of the East Midlands Combined County Authority’s Youth Ambition programme, which aims to ensure young people are supported to build their futures.

It comes as around 40,000 young people in the region are not currently in education, employment or training.

EMCCA will work with schools, colleges, local authorities and training providers to help businesses turn their pledges into opportunities.

John Yarham, chief executive officer of The Careers & Enterprise Company, said:

“We welcome the Mayor’s call for employers to get involved and are already working closely with the Careers Hub, the Combined Authority and businesses across the region to connect with the next generation of talent on their doorstep.”
