A Derby man has been jailed for raping a woman in Chaddesden.

Michael James attacked his victim after arranging to meet her in Scarborough Rise on September 11th 2022.

They went for a walk down a footpath when the 25-year-old subjected her to a 'horrendous' sexual attack.

He denied the offences and so the case was sent to trial at Derby Crown Court.

A jury unanimously found James, of Harrogate Crescent, Chaddesden, guilty of two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of assault by penetration.

James was given a 13-year prison sentence, made up of 10 years behind bars and a three-year extended licence.

He was also made to sign the sex offender register for life during the sentencing hearing at Derby Crown Court on Monday (11th August).

Detective Constable Andy MacAlister, who led the investigation, said: “Firstly, I would like to commend the victim in this case who has shown great bravery and courage in standing up to her attacker to ensure he faced justice.

“The length of the sentence illustrates the seriousness of this crime and we are pleased that James has been taken off our streets for a very long time.

“On top of committing this awful crime he also denied the offence, meaning his victim had to relive the ordeal at court.”

He added: “This was a real team effort, involving multiple officers working with the victim and on the investigation, in order to bring James to justice.

“If there are any victims of sex offences reading this, then I would encourage you to please speak to someone.

“The police work with a wide range of partner agencies in order to make the process of talking about these issues as comfortable as possible.

“We will listen and support you throughout the process.”
