Bird flu declared near Newark-on-Trent
Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was confirmed in commercial poultry near Newark-on-Trent, Newark and Sherwood

The Secretary of State has declared Protection and Surveillance Zones near Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, after confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1).
The declaration imposes measures in specified areas to control the spread of the disease.
From 17:30 on 8th January 2026, areas were designated as Protection and Surveillance Zones.
Protection Zone measures apply within specific boundaries. Surveillance Zone measures apply in surrounding areas.
These measures will remain in place until the declaration is withdrawn or amended by subsequent orders.
The Chief Veterinary Officer confirmed the presence of avian influenza H5N1, after considering the criteria detailed under article 29(5) of the Order, prompting action to prevent further transmission.
Farmers, poultry owners and residents in affected areas are advised to follow government guidelines to minimise risks to their own flocks and the public.
